Hands-On Fire
Training Classes

Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can save lives — but only with proper training. FSI New Mexico offers hands-on fire extinguisher training for businesses throughout Albuquerque, helping your team respond confidently in an emergency and satisfy OSHA and insurance requirements.

OSHA Requires Fire Extinguisher Training

OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.157 requires that all employees who may be expected to use a fire extinguisher receive training on how to use the equipment in their specific workplace. This training must be provided upon initial employment and annually thereafter.

Beyond the legal requirement, proper training makes a real difference in emergencies. An untrained employee may aim at the wrong part of the fire, choose the wrong extinguisher type, or freeze under pressure. A trained employee can act fast and decisively — potentially stopping a small fire before it grows.

FSI New Mexico's certified instructors provide practical, hands-on training conducted at your facility. Each participant leaves with a certificate of completion and the confidence to respond correctly in a fire emergency.

Training is required annually under OSHA 1910.157. We provide signed certificates of completion accepted by OSHA inspectors and most insurance carriers.

What Our Training Covers

Our training sessions walk employees through everything they need to know — from fire classification to hands-on extinguisher use.

1

Fire Classification

Understanding the five fire classes (A, B, C, D, and K) and which type of extinguisher is appropriate for each. Using the wrong agent can make a fire worse.

2

Extinguisher Types & Selection

Identifying the extinguishers in your facility — ABC dry chemical, CO₂, wet chemical — and knowing which to reach for based on the fire class and location.

3

The PASS Technique

Hands-on practice of the four-step PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side. Participants practice on real equipment.

4

When to Fight vs. When to Flee

Training on evaluating whether a fire is safe to fight or requires immediate evacuation — including fire size, smoke conditions, and exit availability.

Who Should Take Fire Training?

OSHA requires training for any employee who may be expected to use a fire extinguisher. In practice, that covers most workplaces. Industries with higher fire risk — such as restaurants, manufacturing, and healthcare — should prioritize annual training for all staff.
